Fifteen days after I nearly bled to death giving birth to his son, my husband—the most feared mafia boss in Chicago—finally remembered he had a wife waiting at home.

Chapter 2

I didn’t cry after Vincent walked out of that hospital room.

I just lay there, staring at the ceiling, listening to the soft hum of my son’s incubator.

By the third day, my body was strong enough to sit up on my own.

My mother brought me soup every morning and never once mentioned Vincent’s name.

She didn’t have to. Her silence said everything.

On the fifth day, my attorney, Diane Cole, came to see me privately.

“You said you wanted to know what’s yours,” she said, setting a folder on my lap.

I opened it with shaking hands.

Inside were documents I hadn’t seen in years—my father’s original shares in Carter Holdings, folded quietly into the marriage the day I said “I do.”

“Your father never let this company disappear into someone else’s name,” Diane said. “He protected it. For you.”

I stared at the numbers. Thirty-one percent. Untouched. Still legally mine.

“Vincent doesn’t know,” I whispered.

“No,” Diane said. “He assumed it merged completely. It didn’t.”

For the first time in fifteen days, I felt something besides grief.

I felt power.

On the seventh day, I moved my personal accounts, quietly, one transfer at a time.

On the ninth day, I hired private security—men loyal to my father’s old business, not Vincent’s.

On the eleventh day, I packed only what mattered: my son’s things, a few photographs, and the folder Diane gave me.

My mother helped me carry the last bag to the car.

“Are you sure about this?” she asked.

“I’ve never been more sure of anything,” I said.

The nanny, Rosa, met me at the door with tears in her eyes.

“Mrs. Carter, if he asks where you went—”

“Tell him the truth,” I said. “I left.”

I didn’t leave a note. I didn’t need to.

Vincent had made his choice the night he stood in a hallway choosing someone else’s voice over his son’s first breath.

On the thirteenth day, Diane called with something I didn’t expect.

“There’s a rumor moving through the South Side,” she said carefully. “About Vanessa Reed. About why she really came back.”

I gripped the phone tighter. “What kind of rumor?”

“The kind that gets people killed if it’s true,” Diane said.

I sat in silence for a long moment.

“Find out,” I finally said. “Everything.”

Two nights later, my phone rang at midnight.

It was Diane again, her voice lower than I’d ever heard it.

“Madison,” she said, “Vanessa isn’t just an ex-girlfriend. She’s connected to the Moretti family. And they’re not happy with Vincent.”
