Chapter 1

Fifteen days after I nearly bled to death giving birth to his son, my husband—the most feared mafia boss in Chicago—finally remembered he had a wife waiting at home. He walked in carrying a half-wilted bouquet of roses, only to hear our nanny whisper, “Mr. Carter… your wife moved out days ago.”

By then, I was already gone.

My name is Madison Carter, and fifteen days earlier, I had been lying in a delivery room while my husband, Vincent Carter, stood outside taking a call from the woman he had never truly forgotten. Vincent controlled half the underground business on Chicago’s South Side, but one soft voice could still make him abandon everything.

“Vincent,” Vanessa Reed had said. “I’m back in the States. I have nowhere else to go.”

I was six hours into labor when he left.

My mother saw him heading toward the elevator and grabbed his sleeve. “Vincent, where are you going? Madison could need surgery.”

“Something came up,” he replied coldly. “I’ll be back.”

He never looked back.

Later, I learned Vanessa had been his college sweetheart, the woman he’d chased all the way to the airport six years earlier before she disappeared overseas. He had eventually married me through family connections, built an empire beside me, and treated our marriage like another arrangement that simply needed managing.

That night, while I screamed his name inside the delivery room, Vincent picked Vanessa up at O’Hare International Airport.

He took her suitcase, drove her downtown, and settled her into a luxury condo overlooking the Chicago River—a property he had bought before our marriage and never once mentioned to me. Vanessa, apparently, smiled at him and said, “You still take care of everything for me, just like before.”

Then my mother called him.

I had started hemorrhaging.

Doctors were preparing for an emergency C-section, and my mother was crying so hard she could barely speak. “Vincent, they need the husband’s signature. Where are you?”

His answer was simple.

“I can’t leave right now. Handle it.”

When my mother told him she legally couldn’t sign, he grew impatient. “Tell the doctors it’s an emergency. They’ll figure something out.”

Then he hung up.

Vanessa supposedly told him to go back to me. That only made him stay longer. They talked until two in the morning about college, old letters, missed chances, and everything she’d suffered overseas.

Vincent finally reached my hospital room after sunrise.

I was pale, stitched, exhausted, and barely strong enough to lift my head. My newborn son was under blue-light therapy because his bilirubin levels were too high.

“Did you handle the emergency?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“Business.”

Then he leaned closer, and I smelled it.

Not smoke. Not whiskey. Not gunpowder.

A woman’s perfume.

“Vincent,” I whispered, staring straight at him, “why do you smell like another woman?”

His shoulders stiffened.

“A client wore too much perfume. We sat close during a meeting.”

He walked out without looking at me.

The second that door closed, something inside me went completely silent.

My hand slid beneath the hospital blanket and picked up my phone. For three days I’d been quietly recording every suspicious conversation, every contradiction, every lie.

I stopped the newest recording, saved it, and sent one message to an attorney.

“I want to know exactly how much of Vincent Carter’s empire belongs to me if I divorce him.”
