A nine-year-old boy followed his dog into a frozen Appalachian forest and found a cold-blooded mafia boss buried alive beneath the snow, his wrists bound and his mouth taped shut.

Chapter 5

The confrontation unfolded with brutal efficiency, years of experience guiding my movements despite lingering weakness from hypothermia and captivity.

Reznik was good, professionally trained, clearly unaccustomed to targets who fought back with equal precision.

“You should be dead already,” he said, circling carefully through the snow-covered trees.

“Disappointing, isn’t it?”

Our exchange was brief, violent, ending when my training proved marginally superior to his professional detachment, years of surviving betrayal and warfare finally paying dividends against a hired gun who’d underestimated his target’s resilience.

Reznik went down permanently, the immediate threat neutralized, though the broader conspiracy behind his contract remained unresolved.

Marcus emerged from the house moments later, confirming Toby and Walt remained safely secured in the reinforced basement, Goliath’s barking finally quieting as danger passed.

“Victor,” I said, breathing heavily from exertion, “bring him here.”

They dragged Victor from the vehicle where he’d remained under guard throughout the confrontation, his earlier composure completely shattered.

“Damon, please, I never meant for it to go this far.”

“You sold my location to men who buried me alive,” I said. “Then you allowed an innocent child’s safehouse to be compromised, whether directly or through your continued association with Kowalski’s people.”

“I can fix this. I can help you find whoever else Kowalski has embedded—”

“You’ve had fifteen years of trust, Victor. That trust is permanently exhausted.”

I nodded toward my security team, who moved forward to secure him properly, formal consequences for his betrayal now inevitable.

As they led him away, I made my way toward the basement, finding Toby pressed against Walt’s side, Goliath positioned protectively in front of both of them.

“Is it over?” Toby asked, his young voice carrying exhaustion beyond his years.

“It’s over,” I confirmed. “The man who wanted to hurt me is gone. The person who arranged everything has been dealt with.”

Walt studied me carefully. “And Kowalski? The larger threat you mentioned?”

“That requires more strategic response,” I admitted honestly. “But your family won’t be involved further. I’ll ensure that personally.”

Toby moved forward suddenly, wrapping his arms around my waist in an unexpected embrace. “I’m glad you’re okay.”

Something shifted in my chest, unfamiliar warmth breaking through years of careful emotional control.

“I’m glad you found me,” I said quietly. “Both of you. All three of you, actually,” I added, glancing at Goliath.
