Chapter 5
The men arrived just after closing, two of them, wearing suits considerably less impressive than Dorian’s but carrying themselves with unmistakable threat beneath polite corporate language.
“Ms. Whitaker,” the taller one said, “we’re following up regarding Halvorsen Holdings’ purchase offer. We understand you haven’t yet responded formally.”
“I haven’t decided,” Claire said carefully, Maddie’s presence in the back room making her acutely aware of every word.
“Perhaps this will help clarify your decision,” the shorter man said, sliding a folder across the counter. Inside were photographs of Maddie’s school, her daily route, careful documentation suggesting surveillance rather than simple business interest.
Claire’s blood ran cold. “What is this?”
“Just ensuring you understand the full scope of considerations involved in your decision,” the taller man said, his tone carrying unmistakable threat beneath professional phrasing.
The moment they left, Claire’s hands shook as she dialed the number Bull had given her three days earlier.
He answered within one ring. “Talk to me.”
She explained everything quickly, panic barely contained beneath her voice.
“Don’t move,” Bull said firmly. “Lock the doors. We’re twenty minutes out.”
True to his word, Dorian arrived considerably faster than twenty minutes later, his expression carrying barely controlled fury as Claire showed him the folder left behind.
“They photographed my daughter,” she said, voice trembling despite her attempts at composure. “Her school. Her route home.”
Dorian’s jaw tightened visibly, studying each photograph with cold, calculating focus. “This ends immediately.”
“How? These are legitimate businessmen, technically.”
“Legitimate businessmen don’t surveil children to pressure their mothers into selling property,” Dorian said. “This is intimidation, plain and clear, regardless of what corporate language they’ve wrapped around it.”
Within hours, Dorian’s people had traced the surveillance operation directly back to Halvorsen Holdings’ senior leadership, confirming a pattern of similar tactics used against multiple small business owners throughout the neighborhood.
“You have leverage now,” Dorian told Claire, presenting documented evidence of the company’s illegal surveillance practices. “This goes to authorities, to press, to anyone willing to expose exactly how they’ve been operating.”
“And if that doesn’t stop them?”
“Then I ensure it stops them personally,” Dorian said, something dangerous and protective settling into his expression. “Nobody threatens a child connected to the woman whose family saved my father’s life, and mine indirectly tonight, without consequences.”
Claire studied him carefully. “This is the second time, isn’t it? What you meant that first night.”
“Protecting you and Maddie from immediate danger,” Dorian confirmed. “Yes. This is exactly what I meant.”
